Auditions for 2026 plays!
Good news! We have auditions coming up for our 2026 plays, "Luau for King Lear," a comedy directed by Sue Pruzek, and "The Charitable Sisterhood Christmas Spectacular," a comedic Christmas mystery directed by Martha Mikula. Come audition for these hilarious plays! August 15th, 10 am-2 pm; August 17th, 5 pm-7 pm at the Bacc Theater.
2026-2027 Season
Luau for King Lear is a comedy play written by Pat Cook. The Peaceful Glen Memorial Players are about to mount a new production, but this time, it's a fight for their lives. It's not just the usual hand-to-hand combat between board members Duncan and Hope for the last donut. This time, the company is about to lose their building. According to the late Archibald Donnelly's will, they could keep the building as long as they do "quality productions." Oh, they have tried, in their own left-field way, to do the classics. "Isn't it true," family heir Blair Beesley asks, "that you did 'Twelve Angry Men' with five actors and seven store mannequins?" Board President Tamara sees an opening when she learns that Blair once minored in drama in college. "You will be our next director!" So, Blair chooses the Shakespearean classic "King Lear," unaware that the play will be set in the tropics to coincide with the town's celebration theme. What Blair faces in the next few weeks are giggling teenagers, a cranky lady who lives in the basement apartment, a leading man with a slight "problem," food fights, and teaching Hawaiian to her cast. All sorts of oddball community theater types come out of the woodwork in this riotous farce where the audience not only gets to see their performance but also what goes on behind the scenes. The show features roles for three men and nine women.
The Charitable Sisterhood Christmas Spectacular is a comedy written by Bo Wilson.
Christmas, 1977, is only three weeks away, and the ladies of the Charitable Sisterhood
are preparing for Second Trinity Church's annual Christmas Spectacular, but they're
having trouble staying focused on their preparations because there's a criminal on the
loose. Someone has stolen the baby Jesus figure from his place in Second Trinity's
nativity scene! Sisterhood leader Bea Littleton is certain that the culprit is her longtime rival, Lucille Orton, from First Salvation. Bea and the other sisterhood members decide they need help getting to the bottom of things, and they call in honorary member and private investigator Janet Murchison to delve deeper and see if she can determine who the perpetrator is. By show time, Janet is starting to think she knows exactly who is guilty of what, but the truth can't be revealed until the end of the Spectacular. As a result, we watch from both onstage and backstage, as the sisterhood performs sacred songs and satirical skits (after all, where else does Santa meet the Wise Men at the manger?). The fun doesn't let up until the hilarious revelation at the show's climax, which leaves the audience and the sisterhood filled with the very best spirit of the Christmas season. The show features roles for five women and can be performed in the Barron Methodist Church basement.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a comedy play written by Christopher
Durang. The story revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged single
siblings, two of whom live together - Vanya (brother) and Sonia (sister), and takes place
during a visit by the third, Masha (sister), a successful actress who supports the other
two and the home they live in. They discuss their lives and loves, argue, and deal with
unexpected situations. Other characters include Cassandra, their somewhat neurotic
cleaning woman, Spike (Masha’s boyfriend), and Nina (their pretty neighbor and an
aspiring actress). In the show, Masha has returned home to attend a costume party at
an influential neighbor's house and insists that her friends and family dress as characters from Disney's animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. As they
prepare for the party, Masha tells them she intends to sell the house, leaving Vanya and
Sonia devastated. Things come to a head the day after the party. As Cassandra uses
a voodoo doll on Masha, Sonia receives a phone call from a man she met at the party,
and Vanya shares a play he has been writing. While Nina is reading it, Spike rudely
answers a text on his phone from Masha’s assistant, introducing more relational chaos.
The show features roles for two men and four women. With some mixed relational overtones, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is not intended to be a family-friendly show. The Spotlighters does its best to cater to a wide variety of audiences!
The Beverly Hillbillies is a musical comedy based on the book by Amanda Rogers,
and the television show by Paul Henning, with music and lyrics by Gregg Opelka. When
Jed Clampett unexpectedly strikes it rich, he moves his family from Bug Tussel in the
Ozarks to Beverly Hills, California. Jed’s beautiful but naïve tomboy daughter, Elly May
is suddenly torn from her pig-farmer fiancé, Lyle, and thrown into a world of debutante
balls, polo matches and people mainly concerned with their place in society. Nearly
taken in by a couple of scheming ne’er-do-wells - including seductive bad boy Justin -
Elly proves traditional country virtue triumphs over slick city vice. She even manages to
teach the villains a lesson in mercy. Elly’s cantankerous Granny is there to put her two
cents in, usually unsolicited. And cousin Jethro, a lovable galoot, comes to the rescue of
a young L.A. damsel in distress. All while banker Millburn Drysdale and his faithful
secretary, Jane Hathaway, do everything they can to keep Jed - and his money - from
leaving Beverly Hills. It’s a story about compassion and tolerance, with a little
moonshine and Ozark stompin’ thrown in to spice it all up. It features roles for five men,
six women, and any number of “extras”. This is a musical so singing and dancing is
required!
